Case Study: Touch Football (AusTouch Program)
Utilising Teaching Games for Understanding (AusTouch Program)
Today, many sporting authorities promote the TGfU approach within their programs, including the Australian Touch Association. Hence, the Australian Touch Association’s junior AusTouch program successfully utilises a “game sense” approach towards its coaching (Touch Football Australia, 2010). The game sense approach employed by the Austouch Program uses modified and progressive games and activities to allow participants to learn how and when to use skills (Australian Sports Commission, 2010). Hence, this style of delivery supports junior participants and ensures an easy transition into more structured affiliate-based touch (ASC, 2010). Similarly, the activities engaged in are designed to be fun and challenging, whilst also incorporating elements of competitiveness (NSW Touch Association, 2006). Correspondingly, Touch Football Australia (2006) highlights the “game sense” model as a highly effective practice and subsequently the most successful approach in operation within its junior AusTouch Programs.
